Over the past couple of decades, there have been many high-profile losses hitting the headlines, the most recent being the 51,770-gt car carrier Hoegh Osaka (built 2000) casualty off Southampton. Other notable incidents include the huge blaze that engulfed the 6,732-teu containship MSC Flaminia (built 2001), the high-profile beaching of the 4,400-teu MSC Napoli (built 1991) on the UK’s south coast, the collision between the 10,114-teu boxship Hanjin Italy (built 2011) and 215,000-cbm LNG carrier Al Gharrafa (built 2008), and the engine-room flooding of the 15,550-teu Emma Maersk (built 2006), to name but a few.
