“Larger ships can also mean larger losses. The industry should prepare for a loss exceeding $1bn in future featuring a container vessel or even a specialised floating offshore facility,” warned Dr Sven Gerhard, Allianz’s head of hull and marine liabilities.

Allianz sees an evolution from containerships of more than 18,000 teu, such as the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller, to the over 19,000-teu CSCL Globe and MSC Oscar to vessels of as much as 22,000 teu by 2018.
