Setel has purchased FDN Marine and Freedom Digital Networks, the companies that developed the Power Line Communication (PLC) system it has been installing in vessels over the past two years.

The merged company brings together the FDN team’s 10 years’ experience of the technology with the sales, operations and administrative capability of Setel, it says.

Power-line systems work by injecting an Internet protocol (IP) signal into the existing copper cabling of a vessel, so the ship becomes its own computer-enabled local area network (LAN).
