Davie Shipbuilding has been given the green light to convert a newly acquired boxship from Capital Ship Management of Greece into a naval auxiliary vessel for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Canadian yard bought the 1,702-teu Asterix (built 2010) from the Evangelos Marinakis-controlled company two weeks ago, in what is believed to be a more than $20m deal.

Instead of carrying containers, the Asterix will be capable of storing two helicopters and refuelling warships while in motion, when its conversion is completed in 24 months.
