The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (NSA) has said it will now allow its members to demolish ships at beaching yards as long as they have been certified as compliant with international safety and environmental standards by an approved independent third party.

The policy reversal comes after a meeting last week with Japanese classification society ClassNK, which has recently certified two Indian beaching breakers as compliant with the Hong Kong Convention on the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention).
