They were part of an order for 10 handysizes booked at China’s Weihai Samjin Shipbuilding five years ago at around $19m apiece. The Belgian owner dropped the contract when Samjin hit financial problems in 2013. At the time, the ships were said to be about 70% complete.
A source familiar with Weihai Samjin confirms the sale of the 36,000-dwt newbuildings (Hull No 1052, 1053 and 1054), adding that Nordic Hamburg is scheduled to take delivery of the first ship at the end of this year and the remaining two by the first half of next year.
