Brazil had been burning as such a bright beacon of opportunity that the mere mention of its name would whet the appetites of shipowners, subsea contractors, rig owners and other oil service players.

There were good reasons for this. During the “white-hot” offshore years, quite a number of owners chose to avoid Brazil, often citing the complexity and high costs. But it made little difference whether an owner was a long-time player there or had never entered those waters because both tended to benefit from the “Brazil effect”, which drew in ships from other regions.
