A company established to provide the shipping industry with an innovative environmental technological solution to the ballast water treatment problem almost folded while regulators tweaked and deliberated over international regulation.

Stavanger-based Optimarin developed ultra-violet and filtration technology it believed provided all the answers to the demands of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Ballast Water Management Convention 2006 (BWMC).

A decade later and the convention has still not yet reached the ratification requirement to enter into force that would call on owners to fit such equipment.
