An application by Indian shipbreakers for approval to demolish European-flag vessels will determine whether it will be possible for Southeast Asian beaching yards to meet European standards.
The yards that have applied are Shree Ram Vessel Scrap, Priya Blue Industries, RL Kalthia Ship Breaking and Leela Ship Recycling.
Under the Ship Recycling Regulation (SRR), breaking yards hoping to make it onto a list have to apply, having been first vetted by a European Union (EU)-approved independent verifier to determine whether the facility is of a standard to make an application prior to a final EU assessment.
