A nearly two-decade-old monopoly on trader chat ends next month as charterers, brokers and shipowners stop using Yahoo’s instant messenger (IM) and connect via rival services.
While many in the shipping industry are leaning towards use of an IM system proffered by leading electronic trading service Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), some favour other IM providers, leading to a potential “Tower of Babel” for trader chat.
