Japan Marine United (JMU) has broken into the medium-range (MR) tanker market after securing eight 50,000-dwt newbuildings from three or four domestic owners.

The vessels will be built at JMU’s Maizuru yard for delivery in 2018 and 2019. The company has previously concentrated on large tankers ranging from panamaxes to VLCCs.

“We have never built such ships before,” said one JMU executive.
