Hanjin Shipping’s failure to avoid bankruptcy has led to fears of potential devastation being wreaked in the container shipping markets.

The decision of the world’s seventh-largest line to file for court protection raises the spectre of more than 60 chartered containerships from feeders up to 13,000 teu being redelivered to owners in the most difficult of charter markets.

It could also result in Hanjin’s fleet of 37 owned boxships from 4,024 teu to 13,000 teu ending up being sold for the benefit of creditors, sources say.
