Although the past 12 months have seen a continuation of the benign claims pattern of recent years there have still been some major casualties and worries that the lessons of earlier losses are not being learnt.

Concerns include the number of fires affecting passengership ro-ro ferries and car carriers, a growing exposure to large and very high-value vessels, notably mega-containerships, while the problem of ships in distress finding places of refuge has not gone away.
