US maritime unions have lashed out at government officials over their handling of sexual assault allegations that are affecting the US Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), the only federally controlled service academy that trains officers and engineers to work on commercial and government ships.

The joint letter by the presidents of the four leading unions urges the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and Maritime Administration (MarAd) not to prolong one of the key measures in response to the situation: the suspension of cadets’ year at sea on commercial vessels.
