Liner operators will enforce looming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) rules on container weighing even after recent US Coast Guard pronouncements on the rules sowed confusion in the sector, lawyers at Holland & Knight said today.

This week, the World Shipping Council (WSC) demanded clarification after the US Coast Guard indicated that the new Safety of Life At Sea (SOLAS) convention rules apply to ships but that the agency has no authority to enforce it against shippers or terminals.

But Holland & Knight maritime lawyers Michael Cavanaugh and Eric Lee wrote in a note to clients that vessel operators are already on track to meet the new SOLAS requirements that are mandatory in most key flag states.
