Australia has played down the prospect of imposing a levy on iron ore exports to China in relation for its imposition of trade restrictions on many of the country’s commodities.

The move comes after a former resources minister Matt Canavan called for the tax in an Australian newspaper.

“We need to make the Chinese Communist Party pay a price because that will be the only thing that will stop further trade restrictions,” Canavan said in the opinion article.
