Indonesia looks to be increasingly pivoting away from its major coal customers in China and India due to the impact of Covid-19 and their changing import requirements.

Indonesia’s coal producers enjoyed export growth approaching 30m tonnes last year, bringing their total annual exports to 372m tonnes, according to shipbroker Simpson Spence Young (SSY).

However, this year, the vulnerability of some Indonesian producers to the Covid-related impacts on demand, particularly in India, has been evident.
