So how do brokers put a value on these vessels?

For a modern gas-injection vessel of a few years old, or a resale, the newbuilding price can provide a useful benchmark. For older first-generation vessels, working backwards from scrap values and looking at any premiums they may offer as conversion candidates is one approach.
