Dutch scientists have estimated 24m pieces of plastic have washed up after boxes fell from MSC Zoe in a January storm.
The highest amount has been found on the beaches of Schiermonnikoog island, the University of Gronigen said.
Suction devices are expected to begin a clean-up this week, Dutch news agency ANP reported.
