The 14,400-dwt Ana (built 1982) initially suffered a mechanical problem north of the Taiwan strait on 7 July, Maritime Bulletin reported.
It was towed to safety and anchored off Lianjiang.
But the Chinese coast guard said it started dragging its anchor in Typhoon Matmo on 23 July.
It drifted on to rocks and its 17 Indian crew members were taken off the ship by helicopters.
