An International Seaways tanker has rescued a stranded sailor under conditions that break new ground with safety protocols necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 69,600-dwt Seaways Reymar (built 2004) diverted to aid a skipper whose 10-metre sailboat became disabled 800 km off Cornwall after its mast detached in rough weather on 22 May.

Ready with PPE

International Seaways crew clad in personal protective equipment (PPE) welcomed the mariner, a UK citizen, with a respirator mask and initially kept him segregated from seafarers until medical clearances could be obtained.
