Top Iranian officials have blamed “Iranophobes” for the deadly attack on a Zodiac Maritime-managed tanker that killed two people.

The latest statements from officials in Tehran indicate that the official line involves pinning blame for the attack on the 49,992-dwt Mercer Street (built 2013) on Iran’s arch enemies, the US, UK, Israel and Saudi Arabia.

In an interview with Iranian reporters on Saturday, brigadier general Abolfazl Shekarchi, a senior spokesman for the Iranian Armed Forces general staff, said the claims of Iran’s involvement in the attack were fabricated by US, UK, Israeli and Saudi Arabian media outlets.
