Container freight rates have fallen to their lowest level in several months as the traditional slack season kicks in.

A composite of freight rates on eight east-west shipping lanes dropped to $1,262 per 40-foot container (feu) for the week to 26 September, according to the World Container Index (WCI).

That is the lowest level since May 2018.

The heaviest drops have been on the westbound Shanghai-Rotterdam route, where rates have fallen by $264 in the past two weeks to $1,247 per feu.
