A US seafarer union has come out hard against President Donald Trump's proposed assistance to the cruise industry.

Don Marcus, president of International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots, this week penned a fiery letter in the union's weekly newsletter opposing the proposal floated earlier this month, on the grounds that US-based cruise majors flag their ships abroad in order to avoid Jones Act regulations.
