Nine people are to stand trial over their part in the sinking of the 4,555-gt ro-pax ferry Express Samina (built 1966) in 2000 that left 80 people dead.

Captain Vassilis Yiannakis is charged with multiple manslaughter with possible malice, while his second in command stands accused of dereliction of duty.

Three other crewmembers from the Express Samina, including second mate Yannis Triandafyllos and chief engineer Gerassimos Siadaressis, will also stand trial.
