Ultramaxes have been among the most popular types of bulkers ordered in the newbuilding surge of 2017, according to data from London-based Braemar ACM and Athens-based Intermodal.
Newbuilding activity in that segment almost tripled between January and November, compared with the same period last year, Intermodal says. Only kamsarmaxes have fared better.
"All the speculative money in newbuildings is going after ultramaxes or kamsarmaxes these days,” a London-based analyst said.
