Dutch owner Wijnne Barends has inked an order for six new eco-cargoships in India.

It has picked Chowgule & Company to build the energy-efficient 4,200-dwt vessels.

They will meet IMO Tier III standards aimed at the reduction of emissions of nitrogen dioxide.

Delivery of the first ship has been scheduled for the last quarter of 2018. The rest will come at intervals of four months.

Wijnne already operates 37 mulitpurposes and general cargoships

It took delivery of the last in a series of 12 highly energy-efficient Dutch-built vessels in December, it said.

It describes itself as the only Dutch shipping company with short-sea vessels that are equipped with exhaust scrubbers, in order to continue to meet the maximum standards allowed for sulphur emissions without changing fuel type.

Wijnne Barends is a part of the Amsterdam-based Spliethoff Group.
