Europe discovered and quickly fell in love with floating storage and regasification units in 2022 as it rushed to stave off a rapidly escalating energy crisis in the face of a loss of Russian pipeline gas.

The Dutch were quickest off the blocks, snapping up and putting two units in place. Domestic energy company Gasunie last week revealed it is assessing the feasibility of a second site for an FSRU at Terneuzen in the south of the Netherlands.

The first of at least six FSRUs for Germany hove into view at the end of November, and myriad officials are declaring that this unit and at least one other could be operational in December.
