Shipowner Mitsui OSK Lines is planning to undertake Japan’s first test of bio-LNG as a marine fuel with a product derived from cattle manure.

MOL said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Air Water for a joint study by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment on liquefied bio-methane (LBM) — also known as bio-LNG — which will be used in LNG-fuelled vessels.

Air Water, which started Japan’s first LBM production plant in October 2022, will produce the LBM from unused biogas produced from cattle manure in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido.
