A swathe of up to 17 LNG carrier newbuilding contracts worth over $3bn in total are set to be signed in the next few weeks as Total opts to forge ahead with its $23bn east African liquefaction project.

Newbuilding sources said the four shortlisted shipowners will share 16 of the vessels that will be backed by long-term contracts with the project.
