South Africa has turned down applications from Karpowership to site three of its vessels at separate coastal locations on environmental grounds after the Turkish company was selected for the projects in March.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) said that, after consideration presented as part of the environmental impact assessment process, it refused the applications for the environmental authorisations for the powerships.
