In a nearly nine-hour mission that began late Sunday, US authorities rescued an ailing seafarer from a Norwegian-flagged tanker sailing in the Pacific Ocean.

The US Coast Guard (USCG), together with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Hawaii Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), medevaced a 32-year-old Latvian crewmember aboard the 50,000-dwt chemical tanker Leikanger (built 2016) from Midway to Hawaii as it sailed more than 1000 kilometres (667 miles) north of the atoll.
