The US government has launched court action to seize almost $3m from a Russian freight forwarder over an alleged money-laundering scheme that it claims was designed to evade US sanctions.

In September 2016, Sovfracht was hit with US trade sanctions for its operations in Crimea. But, according to prosecutors, it then formed a front company, Maritime Assistance, to covertly transfer money through the US financial system.
