The Port of Singapore saw more activity in 2017 due to the rearrangement of worldwide shipping alliances, particularly in the area of container traffic.

The port's container output gained 8.9% to 33.7 million teu last year compared to 2016, according to data gathered by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. (MPA).

"The increase in throughput was spurred by improvements in global trade growth and the repositioning of major shipping alliances," the MPA said in a report released today at the Singapore Maritime Foundation's annual New Year reception.
