India’s minister of shipping, Shri GK Vasan, has reacted to a series of casualties off the country’s coastline and to public pressure for action by announcing a raft of new safety measures during questioning in the Indian parliament.

At the top of the list is a new requirement under the 1958 Merchant Shipping Act for vessels over 25 years old calling at Indian ports to be certified by an International Association of Classification Society (IACS) member and be insured for liabilities including “collision, wreck and removal of salvage”.
