Small-scale specialist Avenir LNG has netted a new three-year LNG deal to supply LNG as bunkers to Swedish ferry company Destination Gotland.

Subsidiary Avenir Marine will supply up to 40,000 tons per annum of LNG as a fuel to the 1,650-passenger ferries Gotland (built 2019) and Visby (built 2018).

The company said the LNG will be delivered to both vessels by ship-to-ship transfer in Visby, Sweden using the 7,500-cbm LNG bunker vessel (LNGBV) newbuilding Avenir Ascension.

Avenir, which said its marine arm has been established to focus on providing supply solutions for LNG and bio-LNG as a marine fuel, said the first delivery under this new agreement was conducted on 8 June.

Deliveries will continue through to the second quarter of 2025.

Avenir chief executive Peter Mackey said Destination Gotland has been “a pioneer in the adoption of LNG as a marine fuel since 2018” adding that the company looks forward to building a long-term partnership with the ferry owner.

“In the coming months we will continue to expand our operations across the Baltic Sea,” Mackey said.

Destination Gotland chief executive Marcus Risberg thanked Avenir Marine for establishing operations in the Baltic Sea area providing new opportunities for LNG and BioLNG bunkering using their recently delivered LNGBV.

This is the second new LNG bunkering operation announced by Avenir this week.

On Monday the company said it had supplied its first bio-LNG volumes to TT-Line’s 56,138-gt, 800-passenger ropax ferry newbuilding Nils Holgersson by truck in the Port of Lubeck, Germany.

Avenir said 10% of the fuel delivered to the vessel was bio-LNG.
