Britain’s sanctions chief has warned that Europe’s wide-ranging Russia programme is likely to usher in a new era of much greater economic warfare.

Giles Thomson, the head of the UK’s Office for Financial Sanctions Implementation (Ofsi), said he was doubling his 45-strong team by the end of the financial year to crack down on Russian sanctions busters.

The tougher stance is likely to have an impact on the shipping industry.
