South Africa’s Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) called in two salvage tugs and put oil response teams and salvors on full alert after a Cosco VLCC ran into trouble off a dangerous stretch of the country’s coastline.

This is the third incident this week in which a ship affiliated with the major Chinese shipping group falls in distress: the others are a bulker running aground twice in South America and a containership catching fire off Cape Town.
