Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd is doubling down on acquisitions from the secondhand boxship market.

The Hamburg-based liner operator has purchased two wide-beam container vessels from Hamburger Lloyd for use in its own services.

The 4,620-teu RHL Calliditas and RHL Constantia (both built 2013) have been purchased at a time when the rising cost of chartered ships is forcing liner operators to re-evaluate their reliance on tonnage providers.
