One might have thought that a merger creating the biggest offshore support vessel company in the world would have made huge waves.

Imagine marrying up two of the biggest global tanker or liner operators to create a giant: that would have triggered plenty of analysis and comment.

But it is an indication of how financially depleted the oil and gas services sector has been that a new combined fleet of 273 vessels triggers little interest — never mind a competition inquiry.
