Denmark’s giant AP Moller-Maersk group is making its first investment in the growing offshore wind farm ship sector.

Subsidiary Maersk Supply Service (MSS), better known for anchor-handling tug supply (AHTS) operations, is to build what it calls a “pioneering” installation vessel for Norwegian and UK energy majors Equinor and BP to operate in the US market.

The company said it has been working on the concept since 2019.

The wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) will be 30% more efficient than using conventional jack-up units due to its “unique feeder capabilities,” MSS added.
