Somali pirates held seafarers for more than 50% longer on average in 2011, according to a report due out this week.

It counts 1,206 hostages in the hands of the gangs during 2011, of which 555 were taken during successful hijackings last year.

The joint submission from Oceans Beyond Piracy and the International Maritime Bureau aims to raise awareness about the human cost of piracy.
