Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega wants to build a new canal for international shipping.
He has submitted a proposal to the leadership committee of the country’s national assembly, which will decide whether to schedule a full vote on the issue.
The government says the waterway will complement the Panama canal, which is already being expanded to cater for bigger vessels.
"The construction of Nicaragua's great canal has always been on the agenda of the Nicaraguan people," said Ortega’s spokesman Paul Oquist.
