A containership and warship have collided in Germany’s Kiel Canal.

German media said the incident on Wednesday morning involved Nordic Hamburg’s 1,036-teu Nordic Bremen (built 2011) and the naval frigate Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The warship suffered a four-metre gash, while boxes were damaged on the merchant vessel, the Kieler Nachrichten website reported.

The boxship was en route from Rotterdam to Helsinki. It has now berthed in Kiel.

High winds have been reported as a possible cause, but German marine police have started an investigation.
