The captain of a Wisdom Marine Lines bulker that cut an internet cable in Algeria has received a suspended sentence.
A court in Annaba handed down a six-month term to Du Chang Long, master of the 28,200–dwt Poavosa Ace (built 2013) .
He was also fined DZD 50,000 ($462) for "violation of the navigation code, destruction of property of others and damage to public strategic equipment at sea”, local media said.
The ship hit a fibre-optic cable with its anchor last October, 13km off the coast, reducing internet traffic in the country by 80% for six days.
