Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) has charged the owners of the wrecked containership Rena for its part in the disaster.

Daina Shipping, a unit of Greece’s Costamare, has been charged with discharging harmful substances following the grounding.

The 3,029-teu Liberian-flagged ship struck a reef about 20 km off Tauranga, New Zealand's biggest export port, in early October.

The charge carries a maximum fine of NZ$600,000 ($488,000) and an additional NZD10,000 for every day the offending continues.

The
