The UK P&I Club has highlighted the big number of seafarers failing their medical examinations due to illnesses linked to obesity.

The protection and indemnity club has thus encouraged shipowners to prevent obesity onboard by providing their crews with a healthy diet.

Sophia Bullard, crew health programme director at UK P&I Club, said: “If being overweight interferes with the person’s role on-board or they are unable to perform part of their job - including safety responsibilities - they may be found temporarily unfit, which means they are unable to go to sea.
