Gibson Shipbrokers is warning that shipping faces not just a big bill for the European Union's decarbonisation measures, but a "regulatory nightmare".

The UK company said the FuelEU Maritime scheme to encourage the uptake of low-carbon fuels will cost the industry €89.7bn ($105bn), with an extra €521.7m in administrative costs also expected.

"One thing is certain, the regulatory burden faced by shipowners will be greater than ever before," the broker added.
