Greek shipowner Evangelos Marinakis is reaping the rewards of a containership and capesize shopping spree in late 2016 and early 2017.

With both markets depressed, Marinakis spent $274m between September 2016 and March 2017 on five modern bulkers and a quintet of 10,000-teu containerships which came up for auction after the collapse of Hanjin Shipping.

Seven of the ships have now been sold with Marinakis’s Capital Maritime having recouped in the region of $320m, while sitting on a paper profit of around $30m on the three capesizes still in his fleet.
