Shipowners looking to order large ships are likely to face higher newbuilding prices following the merger of China’s China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) and China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC) last week, says a top shipbroker.

“With the merger, the competition you used to be able to rely on between a CSIC and a CSSC yard for Newcastlemaxes, VLOCs or VLCCs will be replaced by internal control and nomination of one group yard for any enquiry to remove any internal competition,” said Affinity (Shipping).
